Candy Clear Toys
William Daw Startup pioneered candy making in Utah, bringing across the plains the first candy making equipment in the ox caravan of the 1860's. Included in this equipment were molds for a candy called "clear toys" that he had purchased in the Philadelphia area. An interesting Pennsylvania Dutch Dialect term for clear toy candy is "dierich Orde Glass", or animals of glass. This crystal clear candy was always among the collection on the plate set out on Christmas Eve. The plate has been replaced with the hanging of stockings nowadays.
